Strut your mutt and the mascot bowl

We had a great weekend. We were at strut your mutt and met a lot of wonderful people. Everyone fell in love with Stella McCoy and Fritz. They are three of the service dogs in training with salt lake k9. We loved seeing all of the dogs and meeting their owners. Tonight we were able to be at the mascot bowl at Lehi high school. It was so much fun. The kids that were there LOVED Stella! She is such a good dog. We met a lot of people who were interested in the cause and donated towards other children with autism getting a dog. We met a couple of children with autism tonight and they were drawn to Stella. Cameron didn't want us to take Stella without him, it would have been to much for him there. Hopefully the more comfortable he gets with Stella, the more he will be okay to be around large groups of people. We have a lot of pictures of this weekend that we will post soon. Thanks for following us and would love you to leave a comment.

Midnight Mirage

We had a GREAT time the other night at the Midnight Mariage student recitle. Every year they hold a raffle and give it to a charity. This year they decided to donate the money to the Paws for the Cause Autism Service Dogs. They were able to raise $350.00 to go towards the foundation. It was such a good night. The dancers were amazing and they all got to meet Stella and see why we are doing what we are doing. Thanks to Heather and Midnight Mirage, it was so much fun!

Video of Cam and Stella

I know it's been a while..... I would like to share this link, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMVCzYzgmTc&feature=colike It is a video of Cameron, Stella her trainer and myself talking about why these service/therapy dogs are so important. Cameron is loving Stella more and more each day. He loves taking her for walks. He is very routine oriented so it is the same route every night, but they love it. They run and run in the back yard from the time Cameron gets home until it's time for bed. They both are exhausted when it is bed time. The rest of the family is falling for Stella too. Callie can say her name pretty good and gets so excited to see her. Stella has learned if Callie is eating, she might get a taste too. McCord has been such a big helper in trainig Stella. He is right there with Nate and Ryan learning what to say and how to say it so Stella knows to listen to him. He loves to feed Stella and help take her and Cameron for walks. I have to admit that Stella is by far the best dog we have ever had, we just love her.

ABTC

Friday was agreat day at Autism Behavorial Treatment Center. Salt Lake K9 brought a few of the dogs they have been training and we got to bring Stella for Cameron's class mates to meet. He was so excited to see her when I brought her in. All of the kids were excited to see the dogs, not all of them wanted to touch them, but they were excited to see them. I am not sure if I have explained the reason we are getting a service dog for Cameron. Cameron likes to be in the same room as someone. He doesn't have to be engaged with that person, he just wants to know someone is there with him. He does not do well with change, he gets frustrated and upset if anything in his routine gets messed up. We all know change is unavoidable, so our hope with Stella is she will be the one thing constant in Cameron's life so change might be a little easier. She will go with us everywhere, church, the store, his school and even sleep with Cam. Another thing Stella will learn to to keep track of Cam. He likes to escape and run away. He has gone into our neighbors house, wandered off in the store and tried to escape at school. Stella will learn to follow him and let us know where he is by barking or trying to herd him home. One of the other dogs that was at Cameron's school is a reciently graduated service dog. His name is Fritz and his owner is Michael. Michael has autism but is higher functing. He works a few nights a week at target and is able to take Fritz with him. Michael told the kids how he can work and function better with Fritz by him. It is amazing the effect these dogs have on people. We as a family LOVE Stella. She is a great and loving dog. She is getting bigger and it is fun to see her learn and grow. We will keep you updated on her and her progress.

Progress

Profile Picture
We are loving Stella being in our home.  It is so fun to see her personality.  Cameron and her run all over the place together.  Stella spends a few days with the trainer, Ryan Olsen and the rest of the time with us.  Cameron sure misses her when she is gone. Stella is learning fast.  She can sit, stay, lay down and if she is told to say, she does pretty good to stay until she is released.  We are excited for the 5K and 1 mile fun run coming up in October.  Keep checking the blog, there will soon be a post by Ryan Olsen, the trainer of these amazing dogs, and from some of the other families he is working with.  If you want to sign up for the race PAWS FOR THE CAUSE AUTISM SERVICE DOGS... the link is on the blog, or go to active.com

Meet Stella!

Stella is the newest member of the Bateman family.  We are so excited to have her with us.  She is a Lab/Golden mix and is in training to be a service/therapy dog for Cameron who has autism.
